As a reseller, you are free to use either one of the models or even a combination of both. You do not have to inform us of this and the Reseller Agreement covers both. It is handled by yourself from your reseller account – and is determined solely by the way you sign up customers.
Wholesale model explained: watch the video tutorial.
Retail model explained: watch the video tutorial.
Here are some of the main differences between the two models that can help you determine what is best suited for yourself and for your customers:
1. Who should pay the subscription fee(s)?
2. Is it important for the customer to have access to his own configurations?
3. Do you have access to the code on the customer’s website?
4. Is it important for the customer to enter a contract with a local company?
1. Who should pay the subscription fee(s)?
Under the wholesale model, we invoice you for all the domains and subdomains you have added on your reseller account. This is done monthly in arrears and we subtract the 20% wholesale discount from the amount you need to pay. You then need to invoice your customers in whatever way you prefer.
Under the retail model, we invoice the customer directly and you receive a 40% administration fee for the first 3 years and 20% hereafter.
For some resellers it is fine to pay for their customers’ subscriptions. That gives a lot of flexibility in how they invoice their customers (annually, at higher subscription prices than we charge, as part of a package including other services related to the Cookiebot solution – e.g. support, installation help etc. – or as part of a package including other services from the reseller e.g. hosting etc.).
For other resellers it is not worth the trouble to have to deal with invoicing the customers themselves and it is preferable that the invoice comes directly from us. Some resellers also prefer the retail model for liquidity reasons so they don’t need to pay anything out of their own pocket.
2. Is it important for the customer to have access to his own configurations?
Under the wholesale model, only you as a reseller will have access to the customer configurations. The customer cannot access the scripts, choose the cookie consent banner template or change any wording, layout etc. himself - everything has to go through you.
Under the retail model, both you and the customer have access to the account and configurations.
Some resellers have customers who have no interest – or skills – in this and who just want the reseller to handle everything.
Other resellers have customers who want access to their configurations. Maybe the customer even does the installation themselves and just reaches out to the reseller if/when they need help. In that case, the reseller can then access the account and configuration and provide support. Some resellers also have customers under the retail model who just accept the invitation and create the account – and then do nothing further. The reseller is responsible for adding the domain(s) and for the full installation etc. done via the customer’s account. There is a higher fee to be had for the reseller and no need to send invoices to the customer.
3. Do you have access to the code on the customer’s website?
Under the wholesale model, only you as a reseller will have access to the customer configurations. This means that either you should have access to implement Cookiebot on the customer’s website (i.e. access to insert the needed Javascript and mark up the scripts setting the cookies) or you should instruct the customer on how to do it (and you supply them with the scripts and the needed information from the scan report).
If it is more feasible for the customer to do this setup himself, then a retail model where the customer has access to his own Cookiebot account and configuration may be easier for both of you.
4. Is it important for the customer to enter a contract with a local company?
If you have a government customer or an organisation that for some reason prefers not to deal with foreign companies, then you can choose the wholesale model where the contract is between you and the customer and can be done in your local language and under your courts of law.
Under the retail model, the customer accepts our Terms of Service and an invoice coming from us. Our company is located in Denmark.
