Overview
In certain cases services provides are promoting requirements editing provider links and references e.g. Google has updated how reCAPTCHA operates — shifting from acting as a data controller to a data processor. As a result, suggesting that your cookie declaration should reference your own privacy policy rather than Google's when disclosing reCAPTCHA-related cookies.
To support this, Cookiebot now allows you to override the provider details for reCAPTCHA cookies on a per-domain basis, without affecting how cookies are scanned or classified globally.
How Overwrite a Provider Override
- Log in to your Cookiebot Admin account.
- Navigate to the domain you want to configure.
- Go to Cookies (or Tracker Settings) and locate the desired cookies listed above.
- Select a cookie and open its details panel.
- Under Provider Information, choose the override value (This Website)
- Save your changes.
Your cookie declaration will now display the updated provider as being your own domain (First-Party).
Reverting an Override
To revert to the default repository values, simply switch back the override value from the provider information fields and save. The cookie declaration will automatically fall back to the original scanner defined provider data.
Why This Change Matters
Under e.g. Google's updated terms (effective April 2025), reCAPTCHA operates as a data processor on your behalf. This means you are responsible for informing your users about reCAPTCHA data processing — typically by referencing your own privacy policy, rather than Google's.
Setting a provider override ensures your cookie disclosure stays accurate and compliant with this change.
