Customizing the cookie categories – Cookiebot Support

Cookies can be classified as one of the following categories:

Necessary cookies
Preference cookies
Statistics cookies
Marketing cookies
Unclassified cookies. Please see: Check your unclassified cookies

Can I create new cookie categories?

It is not possible to create additional cookie categories and, for example, use it for a subset of marketing cookies e.g. to allow the user to opt out of cookies from a particular provider.

The user’s consent will be for the entire category e.g. all marketing cookies, all statistics cookies and/or all preference cookies.

Can I delete one of the cookie categories?

The number of categories is fixed to 4. In a ‘custom’ banner you can choose to omit a category that will not be displayed but this does not eliminate the category and you still need to set the value of the left-out category. Can I rename the existing cookie categories?

You can, however, rename the existing 4 categories (necessary, preferences, statistics and marketing) if you would like: Can I rename the 4 cookie categories?.

How to classify cookies?

The categorization depends on the cookie purpose:

Necessary: scripts that are needed to guarantee website functionality.
For example; a cookie enabling shopping basket functionality on an e-commerce website which is necessary for the service requested by the user (= being able to add products to the basket and buy them).

Preferences: setting user choices to navigate the website.
For example; scripts that remember whether a user has seen a popup with a discount code. These are not strictly needed for the website to work, but can make the flow easier for a user.

Statistics: used for analytical purposes.
For example; Google Analytics cookies.

Marketing: used for targeting the user with (personalized) adds.
For example; the Facebook pixel can be used to show specific ads to certain users.
