The Consent Rate Benchmark add-on compares your website’s consent rate with other websites in your industry. It displays your consent rate alongside the industry median and top quartile, helping you understand your performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
The add-on requires no additional code on your website. It uses consent data already collected through your Cookiebot consent banner and is configured per domain.
How the Consent Rate Benchmark works
The Consent Rate Benchmark add-on automatically detects your industry when possible. You can review and correct this classification at any time (see setup below).
Based on your industry and selected country, the add-on displays your consent rate alongside two benchmark values:
- Industry median: The middle consent rate across comparable websites.
- Top quartile: The consent rate reached or exceeded by the top 25% of comparable websites.
Benchmarks are calculated using anonymized, aggregated consent data from Cookiebot websites in the comparison group. No individual website’s data is visible to another customer, and no end-user data is exposed. Benchmarks are only calculated for groups large enough to protect customer anonymity.
The dashboard is updated daily and provides best-practice recommendations based on your current performance to help you improve your consent rate.
Set up the Consent Rate Benchmark
The add-on is configured per domain. If you manage multiple domains, repeat these steps for each domain you want to benchmark.
- In the Cookiebot Admin, navigate to Add-ons.
- If the Consent Rate Benchmark add-on is not added yet, click Compare Rate on its card.
- Open the add-on and set up your benchmark profile. Select the domain you want to benchmark, then review automatically detected information and correct the following details if needed: Industry, Country, and Company size.
- Select Confirm and continue to access the dashboard.
Make sure your profile information is accurate so that your consent rate is compared with the most relevant group of websites. You can update your benchmark profile later if needed.
If your domain has no industry classification yet, you will see your own consent rate, but the benchmark values will remain hidden until you select an industry. Once selected, the industry is applied and the benchmark values become available immediately.
Only industries with sufficient global benchmark data are available for selection. Industries without enough data are not shown in the list.
View your benchmark data
The summary at the top of the dashboard shows:
- Your consent rate: The percentage of visitors who gave consent on your domain.
- Industry median: The middle consent rate across comparable websites.
- Top quartile: The consent rate reached or exceeded by the top 25% of comparable websites.
- Consent rate gap: The difference between your consent rate and the industry median, shown in percentage points.
By default, the benchmark is based on the selected country. If there is not enough benchmark data for that country, the dashboard automatically switches to a global comparison.
The trend chart shows how your consent rate, the industry median, and the top quartile change over time. Use the dashboard filters to select a comparison country and time range. The summary values and trend chart update to reflect the selected filters.
The dashboard also displays best practices for improving your consent rate based on your current performance.
If your domain has fewer than 100 consent events within the previous 30 days, the dashboard shows a “not enough data yet” state. Once your domain reaches this threshold, your consent rate and benchmark data will become available automatically.
Recommendations
- Confirm your benchmark profile first. An accurate industry classification helps ensure that you are compared with the right group of websites.
- Review the trend rather than focusing on a single day. Consent rates can fluctuate as your website traffic changes.
- Treat the benchmark as directional. It shows whether your consent rate is above or below comparable websites, but it is not a precise ranking.
- If your consent rate is below the industry median, start with the best practices shown in the dashboard.
- After changing your consent banner, allow at least one to two weeks before evaluating the results.
Frequently asked questions
No. Consent Rate Benchmark runs entirely on the consent data your Cookiebot banner already collects. There's no additional script or code to add.
Consent Rate Benchmark is included in all Cookiebot™ plans during the launch period. Go to Add-ons in your admin to activate it.
Benchmarks are computed from anonymized, aggregated consent data across Cookiebot websites in the same industry and country group. Only aggregate statistics (median and top quartile) are ever computed and displayed.
Each best-practice recommendation is tagged High, Medium, or Low impact, showing its expected effect on your consent rate. We recommend starting with High impact recommendations first, as they typically have the greatest effect on results.
No. Your individual consent rate is visible only to you. Other customers see only aggregate statistics calculated across a sufficiently large group of websites. If there is not enough data for the selected country, the dashboard automatically switches to a global comparison.
No. The benchmark is computed from consent rates, which are aggregate statistics. No visitor-level data is used or exposed.
Yes. Open the add-on for the domain and edit the industry. Your changes take effect immediately.
Your domain needs at least 100 consent events within the previous 30 days. If you are below this, the dashboard shows a "not enough data yet" state and unlocks automatically once enough data has accumulated.
Your consent rate, the benchmarks, and your recommendations are recalculated every day.
The median and top quartile are recomputed daily as the peer group's consent data updates. They are living values, not fixed thresholds.
No, the add-on is currently available for Cookiebot only.
The add-on requires an active Cookiebot account with a running consent banner, since your own consent data is the basis of the comparison.
