    Hi Chris,

By default Cookiebot recognize some basic and different kind of cookies and separate them into this 4 categories: necessary, preferences, statistics and marketing. For example google analytics cookies are set to statistics category, different ads cookies are assigned to marketing, respectively the necessary site cookies are set to necessary category.

However, Cookiebot does not automatically assign all your website cookies and usually after Cookiebot installation you will have "unclassified" cookies which you needs to classify to a specific category through the admin panel of your cookiebot account.

Necessary category represent the cookies which are needed in order your site to be fully functional and work as it should be.
Preferences category is about the preferences cookies which are not strictly necessary and your website could work without them as well.
Statistics category is used to store statistic cookies such as google analytics and store statistic data.
Respectively marketing category is for cookies with marketing purposed, basically used for ads or youtube.

In Cookiebot is not possible to create additional cookie categories but you can, however, rename the existing 4 categories (necessary, preferences, statistics and marketing) if you would like (see: /hc/en-us/articles/360003806473).

    Thanks for the lengthy explanation!!

How do you determine automatically what is necessary and what is not? Based on what criteria ?

  • Hi Chris,

Necessary cookies are those cookies that without them the website could not be fully functional and work normally.
As a example you could look at a web-shop which is based on Magento CMS, there are some php cookies and also cookies which hold the session which allow you to operate efficiently with the website.

The necessary cookies are based on the criteria if the site can work and be functional with/without them.
If the website cannot work without those cookies then they should be recognized as "necessary cookies". In case that the cookies are not required for the site to work properly, then they should be assigned to other categories. I hope this answer your question.

thanks agin. I understand that necessary cookies are based on the criteria if the site can work and be functional with/without them. But how to identify if they are required for the website to be functional? On what criteria ?

  • Hi Chris,

Usually if the cookies are not automatically set by Cookiebot as necessary then you need to investigate from where the specific cookie comes from, what is it purpose and for what it is used. And based on this you need to assign the cookie to one of the mentioned categories.
Cookiebot does not know all possible cookies which are set on your site, so its your responsibility to investigate and sort different cookies which are not automatically separate among the 4 categories. There is not specific criteria for the necessary cookies, just if the site require a specific cookie to be functional - then its necessary; if the site does not require a specific cookie and can work without it - then it is not necessary.

thanks . Yes I understand that. but the ones cookiebot has labelled necessary, how does  it know that that cookie is needed for the site to be functional? How does it determine that?

  • Hi Chris,

When Cookiebot is integrated on a website it scans the whole site and makes a report will all cookies. Cookiebot has a repository with previously scanned cookies which are already assigned to specific categories. The cookies are categorized as necessary by the provider(s) of the cookies, whom the cookiebot's researches have been in touch with.
This is how Cookiebot knows about some cookies and automatically put them into categories.
