Implementing Cookiebots Prior Consent with Shopify

  • Hi Mark,

For Cookiebot implementation on Shopify you could check the Shopify installation guidelines by visiting the link below:
    https://support.cookiebot.com/hc/en-us/articles/360006184253-Shopify-installation

At the step 2 of the implementation guide is explained how to enable prior consent by applying the attribute "data-cookieconsent" to all script tags that you have access for.
However, if there is a script on your website (Shopify) which adds certain cookies but you cannot modify it by adding the necessary attribute, you could either contact the Shopify support in order to ask how to access the script in question or to assign the cookies to specific categories so they could be loaded only if the cookie category has been accepted by the user.

    Thanks Spas. When you say:

"or to assign the cookies to specific categories so they could be loaded only if the cookie category has been accepted by the user"

Can you expand on this? As far as I am aware, shopify cookie scripts have already been categorised as marketing or analytics in my settings, but this won't prevent them from being run and dropped the first time the user hits the page will it? Only after they accept consent on the banner. Meaning they automatically get dropped before the user has given consent. Am I right?

    Appreciate the help!

  • Hi Mark,

Usually the cookies on your website have been hold on until the user gives consent. For example the marketing cookies are not loaded until the user accept the marketing cookie category and gives consent.

That is why there are different cookie categories and user can choose among them, so they only allow cookies which they find appropriate. You could assign cookie to specific category by applying the attribute "data-cookieconsent" to the script or by classifying the cookies manually from the Cookiebot Manager (admin panel), check this link out:

    Hi Spas,

I'm aware of this but I do not think this is the case with Shopify, once a new user hits a shopify store, they drop multiple cookies even before the consent banner appears and is agreed to. Therefore I need to go into the code and find those cookie scripts and apply the attribute "data-cookieconsent".

What I'm saying is that from what I can see in the admin, these scripts are inaccessible and therefore can't be controlled making most shopify stores non compliant to GDPR. I'm going back and forth with shopify support and they have no clue currently :(

  • Hi Mark,

In case that the issue comes from Shopify platform and these scripts are inaccessible and therefore can't be controlled I think that the best solution would be if you could contact Shopify support for instructions on how they can implement prior consent on the "standard" Shopify tags.
You could also offer Shopify the option to talk directly with Cookiebot support in order to resolve this issue and find the best possible solution for making a Shopify website fully compliant to GDPR.
